Manchester City will not be winning the 2019/20 Champions League trophy at Lisbon after been knocked by French powerhouse Lyon. City though were better than Lyon in all ramification but Pep Guardiola’s tactical blunder and lack of trust on his current defenders ensured the club won’t be winning their first European trophy this season.

City might winning someday but other Pep Guardiola the task is becoming mission impossible.

Here are the five reasons why City have failed to win Champions League under Pep Guardiola”

Controversial decision from VAR and Referees- The build up to Lyon’s second goal against Manchester City was a blatant foul which should never has stood. Moussa Dembele covetously tripped Aymeric Laporte before racing through on goal and scoring..

The referee or VAR should have overruled the game. But this is not the first time such controversial decision has affected City chances of progressing to the later stages of the competition. It happened against Liverpool in 2017/18 season in the semi final at the Eithad and then against Tottentham Hotspur in the 2018/19 season in the semi final. The referee’s call was simply unjust.

Over reliance on certain players {De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling} to win games- Manchester City will not win the Champions League if they keep depending on certain individuals to win them the trophy.

Yes they’ve goalscorers in De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling, Sergio Aguero or Gabriel Jesus but they need the likes of IIkay Gundogan, Bernando SIlva or Fernandinho to pop up and score vital goals when goalscorers have an off- day. The team should be buzzing and spirited and not over dependent on just goalscorers.

Silly mistakes in crucial moments- Manchester City players have the tendency to make stupid mistakes in crucial moments of the match. They give away needless penalties, free-kicks or misplaced pass that lead counter attacks and goals. City have to cut that out and then will have a really shot on winning the Champions League trophy.

Tactical blunders from Pep Guardiola- The manager made a big mistake of not trusting his defenders {John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi} and reverting to a 3-5-2 formation. That formation might City’s creative players David Silva, Bernando Silva and Riyad Mahrez couldn’t start.

Guardiola must trust his players to have any chance of winning the Champions league.
