Why Liverpool’s Lack Of Defensive Reinforcement Will Be The Beginning Of Their Down Fall

Liverpool will kick start their Premier League defense by clashing with Arsenal in the Community Shield at the famous Wembley Stadium. A win will boast the confidence of the team and provide them with the platform to challenge which ever team that wants to stalk a claim to the throne.

But, the Reds win could also count for nothing if something were to happen to two of their most reliable centre backs in Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.

Those two have proven of over the course of last season that they’re the best partnership in the country and arguably in Europe. Van Dijk is as fit as a fiddle and his unbelievable interceptions; ball distribution, aerial prowess and organisational skill is unrivaled at the moment.

He is the reason Liverpool’s back line is organised and almost impenetrable. He makes everyone around him good.

Under Van Dijk stewardship, Joe Gomez has become one of the top 10 defenders in the country. But sadly, those two are the only fit and reliable defenders Liverpool currently have. The other one is fast turning into an injury ravaged player- Joel Mati- can’t even play 10 games in row without breaking down.

In fact, he managed just nine Premier League matches last season before sustaining a long term injury. The Reds can’t defend the Premier League title without signing a replacement for Dejan Lovren as well as a long term successor for Joel Matip.

Manchester City’s fall from grace to grass should’ve thought Liverpool a lesson.

Pep Guardiola’s silly decision not to sign a world class replacement for Vincent Kompany really cost him and his team last season. The history making ‘Treble Winners’ ended up winning just the Caraboa Cup last season and shamefully, finished 18 points below Liverpool.

City’s fall was shocking and a reminded that top defenders don’t only keep out goals, they win trophies.

But sadly, Jurgen Klopp is following similar route by failing to sign a top defender to replace Dejan Lovren even before the season starts. A top defender should have been the club’s first major signing not a left back. A central defender should’ve been signed so as to integrate him to their style of play during pre season.

The truth be told, Klopp can’t really on Van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and a rookie- Matt Philips to win trophies. If those does, this will certainly be the beginning of his and the club’s down fall.
