Liverpool are reportedly searching for a top defender to replace Virgil van Dijk after the Dutch captain sustained a horrendous injury during the Merseyside derby.
Van Dijk is out for 7 to 8 months with an Anterior Ligament Damage and could take up to 2 months of light and then intense training to get back into shape and fitness before playing highly competitive matches.
But as he recovers, Liverpool have began searching for a top defender to provide cover for the reliable Joe Gomez and the injury plagued Joel Matip who will likely break down after 5 to 6 games. Its imperative to note that Liverpool won’t be spending $30 or $100m to sign a defender.
The club budgets for a defender is just $15m, therefore, the sporting director Micheal Edwards must identify the right defender who could offer solace for a short period and prove they belong when Van Dijk recovers fully.
The Reds are interested in signing Bayern Munich utility star David Alaba who will be out of contract this summer but could also leave this summer. Alaba is capable of playing a left side centre back; a right and left back, a defensive midfielder and even as right winger.
His vast arrears of talents makes him the ideal player to replace Van Dijk in defense as well as James Milner in the long run.
Liverpool are also interested in signing Inter Milan defender Milan Škriniar. The talented defender could be the long term replacement of Dejan Lovren who left the club to join Saint Petersburg as well as provide cover for Van Dijk pending on when he recovers from his injury.
