For the first time in Champions League history, Real Madrid could exit the competition in the group stage after losing home and away to Shakhtar Donetsk and dropping to third place.
The Ukraine team were better than Madrid in all ramification and they ensured they capitalized the chances they had on goal.
Shakhtar opened the scoring in the 57th minute thanks to Rapheal Varane’s poor decision making.
His indecision on whether to clear the ball it or leave it allowed Dentinho to race quick and fire the ball pass the onrushing Courtois. Minutes later, Shakhtar made it 2-0 through Marcus Solomon whose curler evaded Courtois outstretched hands and into the post.
His goal meant Shakhtar have a huge chance of qualifyig to the latter stage ahead of Real Madrid. All they have to do is beat the cry baby of the group Inter Milan.
Real Madrid on the other hand could exit the competition for the first in 25 years if they fail to beat table toppers Borrusia Monchengladbach.
A draw won’t be enough, Real Madrid must win their final group stage match to qualify.
