Chelsea have joined the race to sign RB Leipzig’s highly rated defender Dayot Upamecano. The 22-year-old signed a new contract with Leipzig last year and in the contract contains a favourable release clause.
Upamecano’s has a $40m release clause which will become active this summer probably the reason why clubs like Liverpool are yet to sign a defender despite the injuries to their top defenders.
Nevertheless, Chelsea are aiming to sign the potential world class defender ahead of other major competitors this summer. They’ve done it before and they will do it again.
Chelsea are reportedly open to selling six of their fringe players this January. The club will allow the likes of Marcos Alonso, Antonio Rudiger, Emerson Palmieri, Danny Drinkwater and the club’s most expensive goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga to leave.
But, they will only entertain a loan move for Fikayo Tomori. They want him to go out on loan and gather enough experience before returning for first team action at Chelsea.
According to Marca, Chelsea are still the front runners to sign Bayern Munich star David Alaba. The versatile defender has not signed any contract with Real Madrid nor has he reached any agreement with the Spanish giants.
He will leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season and then decide which club can pay him the best and offer him a realistic chance of winning more domestic and European trophies.
