Underrated Frenchman: Is Karim Benzema Good Enough To Win The Ballon d’Or?

Karim Benzema’s career will be remembered as a mixture of childish decision making when young and soul searching and maturity as he ages. Benzema is a world class striker and his leadership qualities are unquestionable.

In absence of Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid, Karim has taken over the goal scoring burden and fired Real Madrid to unexpected La Liga title victory.

This season, he has continued that remarkable streak by scoring in his last six appearances {16 goals with 4 assists in 29 matches}. His goals are the reasons why Real Madrid are in contention of retaining the La Liga title and in mix of winning a record 14 Champions League trophy.

Benzema’s record speaks for itself. The 32-year-old is the second highest scoring Frenchman in football’s history with 365 goals, and the fight highest goal scorer in Real Madrid’s history on 272 goals.

In fact, he’s the fifth most prolific player in Champions League history with 70 goals to his name.

He is truly a remarkable player and Real Madrid are lucky to have him. But, such love is not transcend to the national team by coach Didier Deschamps or the French sports minister.

No one wants Benzema close to the French national team and that limited his chances of been consider for the France based Ballon d’Or or the FIFA World Best Player.

Put it this way, even if Real Madrid win the Champions League and the La Liga Santender with Karim Benzema scoring 50 goals this season, he will still not be consider for the Ballon d’Or. FIFA under Glen Infantino might reconsider and award him..

His exclusion from individual awards is as result of his blackmail/ defamation case involving him and Mathieu Valbuena.

Love Benzema or hate him, he is still a world class player and on current pace, he is good enough to win the Ballon d’Or.
