Joan Laporta’s second term in power will be defined by how he writes off Barcelona’s £1.2b debt rather than how many trophies he manages to win.
2008-2012 remains Barcelona’s most successful period in modern history. The club grew in strenght and stature and till this very day, that team is still regarded as the best in history.
However, the club have seen their fortune decline over the years thanks to Jose Maria Bartomeu poor management of club funds and reckless spending.
To correct that defect, Barcelona must first get rid off Antoine Griezmann, Ousame Dembele and Philippe Coutinho. All three cost Barcelona £360m to sign and yet they won just 3 trophies apiece in 4 years.
Sadly, all three cost Barcelona £815,000-a-week in wages while their resale value is less £200m. Barcelona have to let them go and save £150m in wages next season.
The club should also sell off the likes of Miralem Pjanic, Samuel Umtiti, Martin Braithwaite and Lionel Messi.
Messi signed a mouth watering deal totally €555,237, 619 deal which is expected to last for 4 years. He currently earns €138m in wages, €78m in loyalty bonuses and €52m in performance add-ons.
If Messi leaves, Barcelona will save millions of pounds and probably rebuild the squad. But, on the sporting side, the club will suffer. Barcelona still rely a lot on him to pull the strings, create the chances and score the goals.
