Every season, Liverpool keep making the same mistakes over and over again. Sometimes you begin to wonder if those in charge of recruitment actually know what they’re doing.
Last season, we all saw how the season unfolded as the defense crumbled under pressure. First it was Virgil van Dijk who was ruled out for the rest of the season followed by Joe Gomez and then the injury ravaged Joel Matip.
Without injured Van Dijk, Gomez and Matip, Liverpool’s season went down the drain. Had the club signed Dejan Lovren’s replacement, Liverpool would’ve fought and maybe won a trophy.
Shamefully, the club is trying as hard as possible to replicate last season’s failed project.
The Reds midfielders are crumbling under pressure and sustaining one injury to another. The likes of Harvey Elliot, Thiago Alcantara and Naby Keita are all struggling with one foam of injury and another.
But what happens if Jordan Henderson or Fabinho sustains a serious injury that rules them out for maybe 3 or 4 months? Who can realistically step up and replace those two for the next 5 or 10 games in a row?
You will think James Milner but the 35-year-old isn’t the player he was 3 or 4 years ago, Milner is fantastic player but he does not have the aggressiveness of Fabinho, the physicality of Henderson or, the combativeness and dynamism of both players.
The only player good enough to replace both men was Gini Wijnaldum who the club have refused to replace just the same way they refused to replace Dejan Lovren last season.
At the moment, Liverpool’s successive wins have covered the cracks in the team but soon, the club will understand how important it is to have a good squad depth especially in midfield.
